Born Yesterday Movie Review
In the movie Born Yesterday, a millionaire wants to marry his sugar baby after his sleazy lawyer tells him that a wife cannot be forced to testify against her husband in court. So, to make her more ‘socially acceptable’, he hires a journalist to do just that, but it does not go in his favor when the journalist and woman fall in love. Judy Holliday plays into the role beautifully as the not-so-bright woman named Billie, she keeps the role entertaining and even after Billie becomes smarter and more confident, Holliday is able to keep the same attitude that Billie has at the start of the movie. William Holden also does a wonderful job of playing as the journalist Billie falls in love with, Paul Verrall. Watching the two characters together is so sweet and I adored them both throughout the movie. Broderick Crawford–who played as the millionaire, Harry–plays into his role perfectly as well. He is very expressive and even though Harry’s main personality trait is yelling and being angry, Crawford is still able to make a lively and fluid character. My personal favorite scene is the one where Billie and Harry are playing Gin. It had good comedic timing and was ultimately entertaining to watch. Overall, Born Yesterday is a great film.
While I liked the movie as a whole, I do have some critics, when the movie first began, the plot felt too fast and it was hard to process what was happening at the speed it was going. It slowed down after Paul was hired, however because of that earlier fast-pacing my mother and I had trouble following along until a couple minutes later. Some parts throughout the movie (specifically in the middle and towards the end) also felt too fast. It was only in certain parts and felt sporadic, sometimes it would make certain scenes feel unimportant or confusing. Generally, the pacing was the biggest problem I had during the movie, as a whole it was very entertaining and a great watch.
